Job Title: Toronto Native History Project Mapping Archivist & Data Collection Trainee

Description

The Toronto Native Community History Project (TNCHP) is looking for a motivated, community-oriented Aboriginal individual for a 1-year, full-time, contract position involving the creation of a digital, web-based Indigenous map of Toronto. The successful candidate will work with Aboriginal community members, TNCHP staff, and project partners to collect and convert media and historical, archaeological and oral data to be included in the mapping project. The position will commence on August 20, 2012 and end August 15, 2013.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will work 35 hours per week at the TNCHP located within the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto (NCCT) and will be expected to carry out the following tasks:

1. 1.Training: undertaking all required training for the project.
2. 2.Data Collection: Working with community members to assemble and edit a collection of documents, audio files, photographs and videos relating to the history of Native communities in Toronto to be included in the digital map.
3. 3.Transcription: Scanning appropriate documents with OCR technology to create keyword searchable documents and transcribing all documents that cannot be scanned with OCR (example: hand written documents) so that these documents are also keyword searchable.
4. 4.Data Cleaning: Checking references and sources, fixing OCR scanning mistakes, eliminating duplication and properly formatting information for uploading.
5. 5.Uploading Data: Uploading the geo-referencing and meta-data to the TNCHP web-based mapping program via web-based forms.
6. 6.Reporting: Regularly reporting to the project managers at the TNCHP and COMAP on work progress, through email or Skype.

Required Qualifications:

• Knowledge of Native Communities in Toronto
• Proficient with computers (Word, Excel, internet use, email, Skype)
• Familiarity with databases, HTML and other web-related programming languages
• Qualitative research skills
• Strong communication and writing skills
• Detail-oriented
• Ability to work independently
• Strong organizational skills
• Multitasking

Rate of Pay: $15.00/hr at 35hrs per week
